FORT COLLINS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV women's soccer ended the first weekend of Mountain West play with a 1-1 draw on the road against Colorado State on Sunday afternoon at CSU Soccer Field.
The Rebels (5-2-4, 1-0-1) extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches as they wrapped up a five-game road trip with the hard-fought point against the Rams (6-2-2, 1-0-1). Additionally, the Scarlet & Gray remained unblemished (4-0-2) on the road this season as part of its program-record start as a visitor without a loss.
After CSU struck first in the opening minutes, the Scarlet & Gray overcame a first-half deficit for the fourth time in the last five matches on a 27th-minute equalizer from sophomore
Sarah Martinez. It marked Martinez's first goal as a Rebel after she eluded a Ram defender inside the 18.
During the second-half, the Rebel attack continued to apply heavy pressure with eight shots on the way to a 14-9 overall shot advantage over the Rams. The most threatening of those chances came from freshmen via
Cassie Villanueva's penalty kick that required CSU goalkeeper Shayna Ross to make a miraculous save in the 61st minute and
Trinity Buchanan's shot off the crossbar in the 69th minute.
Backing up the aggressive attack, UNLV's backline repeated its string of strong defending for the group's seventh straight game without conceding a second-half goal. Entering the game after halftime, sophomore goalkeeper
Hanne Breur made two saves on five shots faced to help keep things knotted up.
UP NEXT: The Rebels return to Peter Johann Memorial Field for their first home contest in three weeks on Thursday at 6 p.m. PT vs. San Jose State. A free tailgate with food and drinks will be hosted by the UNLV Soccer Foundation prior to kickoff.
