Woodard Makes It Three

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV standout linebacker Jackson Woodard became just the second Rebel football player in history to earn three Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week honors in the same season, the league announced Monday.

In UNLV's 50-34 win at Utah State on Friday, Woodard (Little Rock, AR) made 12 total tackles, including a half-tackle-for-loss, was responsible for three turnovers and posted a stunning five passes defended, which ties with one other player in the country for the most in the game this season. His night in Logan included recovering a fumble and grabbing two interceptions – all of which led to 17 points for the Rebels – as UNLV set a school record with its fifth straight road win dating back to last season.

Woodard, who joins former Rebel linebacking great Beau Bell (2007) in earning three MW nods, is now tied for second in the nation with four interceptions and leads the country with 1.8 passes defended per game. The team captain also ranks second in the MW with eight tackles for loss and 14th nationally with 9.5 tackles per game.

The All-America candidate and preseason MW Defensive Player of the Year also won the MW honor on Sept. 2 and Sept. 16. This summer Woodard was announced as a member of the official watch lists for the Butkus Award (nation's top linebacker), the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (defensive player of the year) and Chuck Bednarik Award (nation's top overall defensive player).

Woodard and the Rebels will play at Oregon State on Saturday starting at 7 p.m. on The CW Network. UNLV's next home game is a conference clash vs. Boise State on Friday, Oct. 25 at Allegiant Stadium. Tickets are available by calling (702) 739-FANS or visiting unlvtickets.com.
