LAS CRUCES, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV women's tennis has two doubles teams and one singles player still alive after Friday's action at the ITA Mountain Regional on the campus of New Mexico State.
Members from 20 western teams are facing off each day in both singles and doubles through the finals on Tuesday.
In doubles,
Coco Zhao and
Cindy Hu, seeded eighth, downed Aleksandra Bozinkovka and Jessica Hill of Weber State, 8-3, while
Nikol Mircheva and
Hanna Vinahradava upset fourth-seeded Milia Stanojvic and Rixt Van Der Werff of Colorado, 8-3.
In singles qualifying action,
Kaho Oyama won her second match, 6-2, 7-5, over Doya Kurdi of the host Aggies. However, she then fell in main draw action.
The Rebels' top two singles entries both won their opening matches in three sets. Zhao rallied past Meg McCarty of Montana State, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2; and Hu fended off Hudson Hawkins of Montana State, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to advance.
In the Round of 32, played Friday night, Zhao was ousted while Hu won again, downing Alexis Odom of Air Force, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
Each of the 2024 ITA Men's and Women's Division I Regional Championships will see two singles finalists (26) qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship. Meanwhile, the doubles champion from each region (13) will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
