SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's tennis team emerged from an intense road battle with a 4-3 win over UC San Diego Saturday afternoon at the Northview Tennis Courts.
The Rebels improved to 5-3 overall while the Tritons fell to 1-10.
After UNLV dropped the No. 1 doubles match,
Taiyo Hirano and
Illia Maksymchuk downed Daniel Traxler and William Lan, 6-4, at the second court. The team point would come down to the third position and the visitors took it with a marathon tiebreaker as
Joseph Chen and
Aaron Bailey outlasted Phillip Lan and Carson Lee, 7-6 (12-10).
In singles play,
Anton Ornberg won 6-2, 6-3 over Lan at the top of the lineup to improve to 6-1 in dual matches. Hirano swept Zach Pellouchoud, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6 to up his record to 7-0 in duals. UCSD won a trio of matches to eventually tie the match before Bailey closed things out with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Pelayo Rodriguez on court five.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Bailey played lots of extra tennis but came away with deciding wins in both doubles and singles.
