LOS ANGELES (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's tennis team pushed No. 25 to the limit in doubles play and then earned a win during singles in a 6-1 loss Sunday at the famed Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Rebels fell to 5-4 overall while the Bruins improved to 5-2.
Starting in doubles, UNLV won at the top of the lineup as
Jackson Atherton and
Anton Ornberg downed Timothy Li and Giacomo Revelli, 6-2. After the hosts won on court two, the point came down to the third spot and Spencer Johnson and Jorge Gonzalez needed a tiebreaker to get by the Rebel duo of
Aaron Bailey and
Joseph Chen, 7-6 (7-2).
In singles, Ornberg gave No. 29 Govind Nanda a fight at the top before falling 7-5, 6-2. Gonzalez had to go to a super tiebreaker to win his match over Bailey at No. 4, 6-3, 6-7 (8), 1-0 (10-5). The visitors did get on the board, however, with a straight-set victory at the fifth position.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Martin Jovenin gave his team its only point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jeffrey Fradkin on court five.
QUOTABLE: "We played a good match today, just not good enough against UCLA. I was happy to see Martin get his win."
-UNLV Head Coach Andy Jackson
UP NEXT: UNLV will head back to California for a third straight trip with a visit to Stanford on March 8.
