LAS VEGAS (UNLVrebels.com) – UNLV's
Austin Kryszczuk and
Sam Simon have been given Mountain West weekly honors for the first time this season, the league announced today. The former picked up the league's Player of the Week award and the latter earned the conference's Pitcher of the Week honor.
The Rebels (6-1) continued their win streak with a perfect weekend on the diamond, winning all four games last week. The team picked up their first ranked victory since 2019 in the 10-8 win over then-ranked no. 23 Stanford (USA Today) early in the week, then swept Bradley in their three-game series to kick off the first set of games at Earl W. Wilson Stadium.
Kryszczuk totaled a run in every single game over last week with the Rebels, totaling five overall. He picked up three RBI's in the 4-1 win over Bradley, including a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. The home run was marked as the graduate student's 23rd career home run with the Scarlet & Gray. He also picked up the two game-ending RBI's in the 10-0 (8 inn.) win over Bradley, hitting a double down the left-field line. The veteran found an RBI-double to take the lead in the 9-3 win over Bradley, his contact on the ball driving in the first run of the game. Overall on the week, Kryszczuk compiled a slugging percentage of .647 in the four wins.
Simon picks up his first career Mountain West weekly honor after posting a second-straight seven-inning appearance in the 10-0 run-rule win over Bradley. In his time on the mound, he earned a career-high eight strikeouts that included a stretch in the top of the seventh inning where he picked up strikeouts in all three outs. Simon didn't allow a single run for the second-straight start in the contest, only allowing five hits. He also picked up the pitching decision win en route to helping push the Rebels to their six-game win streak.
The duo garners the team's first conference weekly honors of the 2024 season, their last honor stems from
Reese Lueck's Freshman of the Week award back at the end of 2023. The last time the program earned two Mountain West honors in the same week was in April of the 2022 season when Joey Walls was the conference's Player of the Week and
Santino Panaro earned the Freshman of the Week award.
The team will be taking their hot streak to Utah this week for a Tuesday-road match against Utah Tech on Feb. 27. The first pitch of that contest is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. PT / 4:05 p.m. MT. After that they'll head back to Las Vegas to host San Jose State for the first conference games of the season, the first of their three game series scheduled on Friday, March 1.
