LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's tennis team fell 5-2 to Grand Canyon in a non-conference matchup Sunday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels dropped to 6-7 overall while the Antelopes from the WAC improved to 4-11.
The visitors earned a key advantage by taking two of three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. The Rebels' win came on court two where
Taiyo Hirano and
Illia Maksymchuk downed Paolo Rosati and Alfred Almasi, 6-1.
UNLV was strong at the top of singles play, getting straight-set wins on courts 1-2.
Anton Ornberg downed Gerhard Sullwald, 6-0, 6-4, and Maksymchuk got by Pablo Salvador, 6-1, 7-6.
GCU, however, clinched it with straight-setters on courts 4-6 and also took the only three-set match on court three to reach five points.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Illia Maksymchuk excelled at the No. 2 position in both singles and doubles.
QUOTABLE: "GCU was better than us in every aspect of the competition. That is the first time I've felt like that this season but I'm confident that we'll bounce back."
