LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team split the opening weekend of Mountain West play against Colorado State on Sunday at Eller Media Stadium.

After Saturday's matchup being canceled due to an unsuspected day full of rainy weather, the Rebels (16-9, 1-1) hosted a doubleheader with the Rams (18-9,1-1 MW) late Sunday morning into early afternoon. In the first game, UNLV only produced two runs as they fell 9-2. In game two of the doubleheader, UNLV was able to earn a comeback victory, 5-4 over the Rams.

GAME 1: UNLV 2, COLORADO STATE 9

In the top of the first inning, the Rams took a quick 2-0 lead off two hits. However, UNLV was quick to respond in the bottom of the first.
Janyssa Martin singled and
Ariana Martinez doubled to give them two base runners.
Alyssa Trejo then stepped up to the plate and hit an infield ground ball that brought Martin.
Jesse Farrell then roped a single, which brought Martinez across home plate to even up the score 2-all. The two runs of the inning would be the only ones the Rebels would get for the game as Colorado State was able to gradually strengthen the lead and win 9-2.

GAME 2: UNLV 5, COLORADO STATE 4

It was all Rebels for the first three innings in game two of the day in which they tallied an early lead. In the bottom of the first inning, Martinez and Trejo both walked, and Farrell smacked a single through the left side to bring Martinez home and made it 1-0. The next inning and a half was scoreless until the Rebels came back to the plate in the bottom of the third inning. Farrell got her second hit of the game, which was a double to bring two runs home to give the Rebels a 3-0 lead. The fourth inning was again scoreless on both sides. Colorado State took the lead in the top of the fifth inning on a grand slam, 4-3. The Rebels were not going down without a fight after Trejo tripled down the right field line that sent Martinez home to tie up the game, 4-all. Then
Sofia Morales stepped into the box and delivered an infield single to bring another run home and gave UNLV a 5-4 lead. The Rebels were able to hold on and retire the Rams in the top of the seventh inning as they threatened with a runner in scoring position.

OTHER NOTES:
- The Rebels had two players bat .500 on the day which included Farrell and Martinez.
- Farrell was 3-for-6 on the day including a double and a team-high four RBI. She had a .667 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. Her three RBI in game one tied her career high. Farrell is now on a seven-game hitting and reached base streak.
- Martinez was 2-for-4 on the day including a double and three walks. She had a .750 slugging percentage and .714 on-base percentage. Martinez has now reached base in 22 straight games.
- Alanna Thiede picked up her 10th win of the season, which was in relief.

UP NEXT: The Rebels head to New Mexico to take on the Lobos for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 22 and concluding on Sunday, March 24. The first game between the two conference teams is set for 6 p.m.
