LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- After opening his first spring practice as UNLV head coach during a winter storm a year ago,
Barry Odom this time led his team through its spring lid-lifter despite a historic wind storm in Southern Nevada on Saturday at Rebel Park.
"Last year on this day it was, I don't know what we call it -- it was sideways rain, sleet, snow and about 37 degree -- so I guess we needed another dose of that today with the wind," said Odom in his post-practice media session. "But the challenge I told (the team) is that late in the season on the road we'll be competing for a championship and we can't control the elements. So, I thought they embraced it. They attacked the 24 periods that we had today.
UNLV, which tied for first place in the Mountain West and reached a bowl game for the first time in a decade in Odom's first season, is dressing 99 players for his second spring ball. Despite the unusual weather obstacles, the 2023 conference Coach of the Year said it was a productive start.
"I thought our assistant coaches did a tremendous job on organizing and getting our players in position to efficiently and effectively go through Practice One. I think there's some positive energy when there's continuity coming back from year to year (on the staff). We had a lot of new faces, obviously, on our roster out there today but overall, on how we went from flow to flow of practice and the habits and really the speed and the tempo was where we needed to be. Tomorrow needs to be better in some areas than we were today and certainly we'll work to get that done."
UNLV will be back on the field Sunday and then hold two more sessions before heading out for spring break.
The public is invited to the free UNLV Spring Showcase at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday, April 6 with a 1 p.m. start.
