Five Rebels Hit Homers To Help Split Doubleheader Against New Mexico

UNLV took the series 2-1 over New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team endured an exciting doubleheader as they split on the day and took two of the three game series against New Mexico.

The first game of the day for the Rebels (18-10, 3-2) was a nailbiter as they were tied 1-1 with New Mexico (9-24,1-3) for the entirety of the game and went into an extra inning. It was until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Lobos hit a walk-off home run to top UNLV 2-1. However, in game two the Rebels bounced back and had the bats going to top New Mexico 8-2.

GAME 1: UNLV 1, New Mexico 2 (8 innings)
In the top of the first inning the Rebels grabbed their only run of the game with a single from Alyssa Trejo to bring home Maddie Schmidt and took a 1-0 lead. The Lobos quickly responded in the bottom half of the first to tie the game 1-all. Both squads were scoreless for the next six innings and forced an extra inning. In the top of the eighth, the Rebels were unfortunately retired in order. In the bottom of the eighth, the Lobos walked it off with a solo homer to collect a 2-1 win.

GAME 2: UNLV 8, New Mexico 2
In an exciting finale, the Rebels bats got hot and were unable to be stopped. Between the first and second innings, UNLV was quiet, and the Lobos took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. However, in the third inning everything changed after Marisa Bowman helped the Rebels tie the game 1-1 with a solo blast over the center field wall. Jesse Farrell quickly followed with a single up the middle. Ariana Martinez then stepped up to the plate and smacked a homer to center which extended the lead to 3-1. New Mexico tallied a run of the game in the bottom of the third inning to make it 3-2, which ultimately became their last run of the game. In the fourth inning, the home run streak continued as Farrell roped a three-run blast which made it 6-2. Alyssa Trejo and Janyssa Martin each hit a home run of their own, with Trejo's coming in the top of the fifth inning and Martin's in the top of the seventh. The Lobos tried to start a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning as they had two runners on with two outs, but a fly out to right field closed out the game.
