UNLV Falls To Aztecs

SAN DIEGO (UNLVrebels.com) – Coming off of their 9-2 win on Friday night, the UNLV baseball team (18-16, 6-11 MW) took the field again on Saturday afternoon against San Diego State (11-23, 5-12) to continue their weekend series. Despite picking up five runs in the final four innings of play, the Rebels would fall on a final score of 7-5.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Aztecs struck first in the contest, picking up a run in the bottom of the first inning with a grounder while runners stood on the corners.
- Parker Schmidt was able to pick up a single to right field early in the second inning, but despite a couple fly balls, the Scarlet & Gray would be held scoreless.
- A leadoff double led San Diego State to strike again in the second inning, scoring a second run.
- The Rebels pick up a runner in scoring position after JP Hefft and Brendan O'Sullivan each earn walks, but San Diego State will hold the lineup from scoring in the top of the fourth.
- Kade Higgins opened up the scoring for UNLV in the top of the sixth, blasting a home run straight through center field to close the Aztecs' gap to one run.
- O'Sullivan and Alex Pimentel were able to strike back-to-back singles and put runners back in scoring positions soon after, but the Aztecs would get the third out before more damage was dealt.
- After stepping on the mound in the bottom of the fifth, LJ Mercurius started the bottom of the sixth with two-straight strikeouts.
- The Aztecs wouldn't stay quiet much longer, erupting for four runs later in the inning.
- The Rebels tallied a handful of runs in the bottom of the seventh, Hefft scoring off a wild pitch, Parker Schmidt booting an RBI single and Pimentel taking an RBI walk to inch closer 6-4.
- Maloney subbed in on the mound in the bottom of the seventh and kept San Diego State scoreless to start, picking off the leadoff single at first base.
- Paul Myro IV put down the pressure on the Aztec pitchers in the bottom of the eighth, hitting a leadoff home run on a 0-2 count to close their lead to one run.
- The Aztecs responded with a run of their own in the next half inning, pushing the gap back up to two runs.
- The Hustlin' Rebels loaded the bases with no outs in their final attempt batting, the Scarlet & Gray would go down on a strikeout, fly ball and a grounder to end the game. 
   
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- UNLV's 14 hits on Saturday marked their third game in a row with double-digit hits, their fourth time this season hitting that streak.
- Charles' double in the fifth inning earned him his third two-bag hit in the last four games.
- The Scarlet & Gray extend their scoring streak to 188-consecutive games, avoiding being shut out in any contest since the 2021 season.
