SAN DIEGO (UNLVrebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team (19-16, 7-11 MW) came out on Sunday afternoon for the series finale against San Diego State (11-24, 5-13), both teams each earning a win so far in the weekend series. The Rebels claimed the series win on an emphatic showcase of hitting, picking up the win on a 14-5 final score.
Both teams placed pressure early on the starting pitchers, the Aztecs first with a single in the bottom of the first that eventually advanced to third base. After holding them from scoring, the Rebels would put a runner in scoring position in the next half inning when
Parker Schmidt and
Brendan O'Sullivan earned back-to-back walks and an additional advancement off of a wild pitch.
After stopping the Rebels, the Aztecs would take a two-run lead off a home run in the bottom of the second inning. Their two-run lead didn't last long,
Rylan Charles blasting a leadoff home run past the right-field wall to cut the gap to one run in the top of the third inning. It wouldn't stop there, O'Sullivan launching a two-out double with two baserunners to convert both into RBIs.
Chase Ditmar picked up an RBI of his own in the next at-bat, bringing in O'Sullivan on a single to left-center field to push the score 4-2 in favor of UNLV.
It wouldn't be the last time that Charles dealt damage to San Diego State, slamming a home run in his second-consecutive at bat in the top of the fourth inning. His homer through right-center field snagged two runs for the Rebels, extending their lead to four runs. The Scarlet & Gray continued the scoring later in the fifth,
Bailey Seeger knocking a ball off the center-field wall for an RBI triple and then
Paul Myro IV hitting a sacrifice fly the next at bat to bring him in as the team's eighth run of the contest.
The runs continued to flow in for the Scarlet & Gray in the top of the sixth,
Austin Kryszczuk doubling to left-center to drive in
JP Hefft from first base. He wouldn't be on base long, O'Sullivan garnering another trip to first base in the game, this time with an RBI single that drove home Kryszczuk. Ditmar would strike again in the top of the eighth with an RBI triple off the wall, but it wasn't the last three-bag hit as Hefft would slam one of his own in the bottom of the ninth.
