RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – Behind three players recording par-or-better scores, the UNLV women's golf team moved into third place after Tuesday's first round of the Mountain West Championship on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club (Par 72, 6,286 yards).
Junior
Toa Yokoyama shot a first-round 1-under 71 as the Rebels' day-one leader inside the top 10 in a tie for seventh place. Hovering just outside the top 10 for the Scarlet & Gray, graduate student
Maria Jose Martinez and
Mayumi Umezu each tallied even-par 72 rounds to sit tied for 11th.
Following Yokoyama, Martinez and Umezu in the Scarlet & Gray lineup, sophomore
Thienna Huynh (+2) and junior
McKenzi Hall (+4) sit tied for 22nd and 29th, respectively.
San Jose State opened up the tournament with an 8-under to claim the lead through 18 holes. The Rebels, who shot a 1-over as a team, are vying for position atop the leaderboard within three shots of Colorado State (-2) in second place.
Atop the individual leaderboard, SJSU's Lucia Lopez-Ortega dropped a 5-under 67 for a one-shot lead over her Spartan teammate Kajsa Arwefjall (-4).
