LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV football boasts two members of the 2024 Outland Trophy Preseason Watch List as senior offensive linemen
Tiger Shanks and
Jalen St. John both earned spots on the 75-player list released Tuesday by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
Named after former Penn great John Outland, the Outland Trophy has been awarded to college football's top interior offensive or defensive lineman since 1946.
Shanks (Lake Oswego, OR) and St. John (St. Louis, MO) are the first Rebels to be members of the preseason list for the Outland since defensive lineman Howie Fuimaono in 2006. There are 24 offensive tackles on this year's list with 19 defensive tackles and 18 guards to go with 14 centers.
A three-year starter at tackle, Shanks is a Preseason First Team All-Mountain West selection after becoming the first Rebel offensive lineman in 21 years to earn first team honors a year ago. St. John transferred to UNLV from Arkansas last year and earned a starting spot, with the versatility to play at both guard and tackle. He was named 2024 Preseason All-MW by Phil Steele.
The FWAA will announce the Outland Trophy semifinalists on November 20, and those players will be paired down to three finalists announced on November 26. The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from those finalists who will be part of the annual FWAA All-America Team. The recipient of the 2024 Outland Trophy will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards, live on ESPN on December 12. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha on Jan. 22, 2025.
Under the direction of 2023 Mountain West Coach of the Year
Barry Odom, the Rebels will kick off their 57th season of football on August 31 by heading to Big 12 Conference member Houston at 4 p.m. PT on FS1 in the first of a school-record 11 national TV games. The home opener comes one week later when Utah Tech comes to Allegiant Stadium for a noon kickoff on September 7.
