LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's tennis team needed just over two hours to defeat UC Riverside 6-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels improved to 2-0 while the Highlanders fell to 0-2.
The hosts rolled through doubles play by winning on courts one and three to clinch the 1-0 lead.
Illia Maksymchuk and
Kemal Karakas downed Justin Lamy and Hugo DeGrande, 6-0, while
Joel Gibson and
Vitaliy Horovoy got by Alexey Efremov and Lucas Mszyca, 6-2.
In singles play, the Rebels swept sets on five of six courts.
Maksymchuk downed Lamy, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1;
Dusan Rsovac won 6-2, 6-1 over DeGrande at No. 2; Karakas defeated Efremoy, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4; Horovoy downed Mszyca, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5; and Gibson finished off Ryan Huynh, 6-1, 6-4, on court six.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Illia Maksymchuk breezed through his doubles and then singles matches at the top of the lineup.
QUOTABLE: "Good win for us today. With half of our team being new this semester, we need it. We have a big challenge coming up next vs. Weber State, which beat us here in a really good match."
