LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's tennis team capped off a perfect opening week with a 4-2 win over New Mexico State on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels improved to 4-0 while the Aggies fell to 2-5.
UNLV lost the doubles point for the first time this season after a wild finish. The hosts won easily at the top court before dropping a pair of tiebreaker finishes gave NMSU a 1-0 lead.
Needing to rally in singles, the Rebs did just that.
Illia Maksymchuk downed Itay Feigin, 6-3, 6-2, at the first position;
Kemal Karakas downed Matias Rojas, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4;
Vitaliy Horovoy downed Gustavo Campos, 6-2, 6-2, and
Joel Gibson clinched it by rallying on court six with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Lance Urlaub.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Illia Maksymchuk flew through doubles play and then swept at the top of the singles lineup to improve to a combined 8-0 this week.
QUOTABLE: "Today we needed to play our best match so far and we did. It was a good week for UNLV and we are excited to go play at USC with a 4-0 record."
-UNLV Head Coach Andy Jackson
UP NEXT: UNLV will play its first away match this season by traveling to USC on Sunday, Feb. 2. The next Rebel home appearance will be Feb. 7 vs. Idaho State starting at 1 p.m. Admission to all matches at the Fertitta Tennis Complex are free of charge.
