LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's swimming and diving team won their dual meet over BYU, 156.5-124.5, while the Rebel men fell, 172-108, in Friday's home-opener at Jim Reitz Pool.
THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:
- The Rebels claimed an event victory in the 400 medley relay (3:38.87) behind the efforts of sophomore Halayna Montrichard (54.83), sophomore Brinkley Hallgren (1:02.90), junior Fernanda Mendez Guerra (52.43) and senior Erika Carlson (48.71).
- Dominating in the 1000 free, junior Ava Olson earned an event victory in a school record time of 9:51.82. She finished over 16 seconds ahead of the Cougars' second-place finisher.
- Olson also earned an event win in the 500 free (4:52.93).
- In a 1-2-3 Scarlet & Gray sweep in the 100 back, junior Dominika Trentkiewicz took first (54.32), while Montrichard (54.95) and sophomore Grace Wharton (55.42) finished second and third, respectively. Trentkiewicz added another second-place finish in a Rebel sweep of the 200 back.
- Sweeping the top two spots in the 200 fly, freshman Rachel Wigginton finished first (1:59.67) and sophomore Lauren Palacios took second (2:01.01).
- The Rebels had three swimmers produce multiple individual victories, including Wharton in the 200 back (1:58.77) and 400 IM (4:18.41), Mendez Guerra in the 50 free (22.95) and 100 fly (53.96) and Carlson in the 200 free (1:46.36) and 100 free (49.30).
- Sophomore Allyse Abbott earned a first-place finish in the 1-meter dive with a score of 276.45. Additionally, she posted a second-place finish in the 3-meter dive (278.10).
THE RUNDOWN – MEN:
- Completing another 1-2-3 Rebel sweep of the 100 back, junior Wikus Potgieter took first place (47.67), while junior Tatsuki Inoue finished second (47.72) and freshman Wes Mank placed in third (48.71).
- Senior Bryson Huey added wins in the 50 free (19.25) and 100 free (43.65).
- In the 200 free, junior Ambrus Barcsak powered his way to a second-place finish (1:35.89).
- In the 200 fly, senior Colby Raffel finished second with a time of 1:46.15.
- Claiming the top two spots in the 200 back, Inoue finished first (1:44.73) and Potgieter followed in second (1:47.44).
- In the 3-meter dive, freshman Evan Stingley placed second with a score of 302.70.
QUOTABLE: "I'm really proud of how the team did tonight in front of a great crowd. The women showed great effort by winning nine events. The men had a lot of injuries and those holes showed in our line up. Looking forward to bouncing back tomorrow against Utah."
