LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - For the second straight game, four Lady Rebels scored in double-figures as the UNLV women's basketball team downed New Mexico 89-71 on Saturday afternoon at The Pavilion. Under head coach
Lindy La Rocque, the Scarlet & Gray (7-5, 2-0) are 8-3 all-time against the Lobos (9-4, 1-1).
Destiny Leo collected a season-high 20 points to lead UNLV. Leo only missed two shots on the night going a perfect 2-for-2 at the free throw line and was huge from long range going 6-for-8.
Meadow Roland was the second-leading scorer on the day with 18 points. Roland was tied for the team-lead in assists with five.
Shelbee Brown earned her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Aaliyah Alexander had 13 points and was tied for the team-lead in assists with five.
The Lobos were led by Cacia Antonio's 22 points and Destinee Hooks' 13 points. Emma Najjuma brought down a team-high seven rebounds for New Mexico.
HUGE FIRST QUARTER SCORING RUN: The Lobos came out the gate scoring six straight points, but the Lady Rebels were able to get within two thanks to a Leo three-pointer and a Roland layup. New Mexico went back up by three, 8-5, before UNLV began a huge 23-2 scoring run to make it 28-10. The Scarlet & Gray then never looked back after putting up a double-digit lead.
STAT OF THE GAME: The Lady Rebels out-shot the Lobos in every category. UNLV shot 51.7% (30 of 58) for the game compared to New Mexico's 44.1% (26 of 59). The Lady Rebels had their best three-point shooting with 57.1% (16 of 28) compared to the Lobos' 31.8% (7 of 22) from the three.
OTHER NOTES:
- UNLV out-rebounded New Mexico 37-29.
- Trystan James had a season/career-high six points by shooting 2-for-4 from the field and was 2-for-3 from behind the arc. She also brought down a season/career-high three rebounds.
- The Lady Rebels dished a season-high 23 assists. Shelbee Brown, Jasmyn Lott, Teagan Colvin and Mariah Elohim each had three.
- UNLV had 16 second chance points compared to New Mexico's 11.
- Hodaya Kabada and Sydni Summers each made their Lady Rebels debut.
- The Lobos won the paint party 34-28.
- UNLV has now earned a victory over New Mexico in the last five out of six meetings.
UP NEXT: UNLV will have an 11-day break before being back on the court to host Fresno State for a New Year's Eve matinee game. The Lady Rebels and Bulldogs will tip-off on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 12 p.m.
