LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Softball team remains undefeated in the UNLV Rebel Classic after defeating Idaho State 4-2 on day two of the home tournament on Saturday at Eller Media Stadium.
The Rebels (6-2) and Bengals (5-3) took turns scoring in each of the first four innings and both sides were held scoreless for the final three.
Yanina Sherwood collected her third victory in the circle for the Rebels.
HOW IT WENT DOWN: In the bottom of the first inning,
Jesse Farrell roped a triple to left field to get things going.
Ariana Martinez then stepped to the plate and sent a double to right center scoring Farrell to give UNLV a 1-0 lead. Martinez was able to advance to third on a Bengals' wild pitch. Martinez tagged up on a
Karmyna Becerra line out to right field and scored the second run of the inning. The Bengals answered with one run of their own in the top of the second inning on a single through the right side to get within one, 2-1. In the bottom half of the third. With two outs, Martinez drew a walk. Becerra then singled to center, which gave the Rebels runners on second and first. UNLV then hit back-to-back singles to extend the lead 4-1. Idaho State tallied another run in the top of the fourth inning, to cut the deficit to two, 4-2. The Rebels and Bengals each held each other off the scoreboard for the next two innings and in the top of the seventh Idaho State had their leadoff runner on, but the Scarlet & Gray retired the Bengals in order to hold onto the lead.
OTHER NOTES:
- UNLV had seven hits against Idaho State, which all seven hits came from seven different Rebels.
- Becerra, Farrell, Martinez and Destinee Noury each went 1-for-2 against the Bengals. Farrell and Martinez also had a walk.
- Diamond Sefe, Sofia Morales and Maddie Scott were all 1-for-3 on the day against Idaho State.
- Jazmine Chavez started the game and threw 2.1 innings only allowing one run and had one strikeout.
- Sherwood had 4.2 innings of work and four strikeouts. She also only allowed one run.
- Martinez and Noury both had doubles on the day, and Farrell had the game's only triple.
