HOUSTON (UNLVRebels.com) – Sophomore Fernanda Mendez Guerra won the 100 fly title to lead UNLV women's swimming and diving's three-medal outing on Friday's third day of the Mountain West Championships at CRWC Natatorium.
Mendez Guerra gave the Rebels their third consecutive gold medal win in the 100 fly by a UNLV swimmer with the third-fastest time in school history (52.61). She followed the footsteps of Blanka Bokros, who won the two individual titles in the event each of the two years prior.
Making her way onto the podium, junior Erika Carlson earned a bronze medal in the 200 free. During prelims, she set the program record, topping a 24-year-old mark in the event (1:46.05) previously held by Rebel All-American Lorena Diaconescu and nearly bested that in the finals (1:46.27).
Closing out the Rebel podium finishes on the night, sophomore Dominika Trentkiewicz grabbed a silver medal in the 100 back (52.62) and broke former Rebel Carmen Robb's program record that stood since 2013.
After their performances, the Scarlet & Gray (797 points) ended the night at second in the team standings within 38 points of day-three leader San Diego State's 835 points.
