LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's tennis team shook off its first loss of the season and downed New Mexico State 4-0 on Saturday morning at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
 
The Rebels improved to 7-1 while the Aggies fell to 8-5.
 
The opening doubles competition proved dramatic. The squads split the first two completed matches at the top and bottom, including Hanna Vinahradava and Nikol Mircheva downing Anna Pinaieva and Nadia Nemeth, 6-3, at No. 1. For the second straight day, the doubles point would come down to the middle matchup and after the Aggie duo built a 4-0 lead, Coco Zhao and Cindy Hu stormed back to win six straight points and capture the 1-0 lead for their team.
 
In singles, UNLV won four of six first sets and was leading in the second set of the other two when they were halted after clinching. The Rebels were able to end things with a trio of straight-setters. Zhao downed Whitney Moon, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3; Mircheva swept Dora Kurdi, 6-4, 6-1, at No.4; and Kaho Oyama breezed past Nemeth, 6-1, 6-0, on court five.
 
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Coco Zhao helped engineer the big doubles comeback and then flew past her opponent in singles play to help preserve the shutout.  
 
UP NEXT: UNLV will close out its season-opening, nine-match homestand on Sunday by welcoming Penn State for the first time in history. The Big Ten school is ranked No. 52 in the nation. Doubles start at 10 a.m. and all matches at Fertitta Tennis Complex are free of charge.
