LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's tennis team lost at home for the first time this season in a four-hour match vs. Idaho State, 4-3, on a windy Friday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels fell to 4-2 while the Bengals, who are coached by former UNLV assistant Oliver Good, improved to 4-3.
UNLV opened by taking the doubles point for a 1-0 lead.
Joel Gibson and
Vitaliy Horovoy downed Lewie Bouman and Hayden Ciguenza, 6-3, at the third spot before
Thomas Navarro and
Dusan Rsovac clinched things with a 6-2 victory over Jowan Rawson and Quentin Lamothe on court two.
The team split the only straight-set results in singles play with the Rebels winning on top and the Bengals prevailing on the bottom of the lineup. The other four matches all went the distance and ISU took three of them with only Horovoy earning a point for the hosts, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, over Bouman at No. 5.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Vitaliy Horovoy helped his team win the doubles point and then fought off his Bengal opponent in singles to tie the match at 3-3.
QUOTABLE: "Congrats to Idaho State. We fought hard enough to win today but didn't play well enough to win in the end. Our next opponent, NAU, crushed us last season (6-1) and will be the second-best team we've played so far this year -- so we'll have to be ready."
-UNLV Head Coach Andy Jackson
UP NEXT: UNLV will host the Lumberjacks on Sunday starting with doubles play at 11 a.m. Admission to all matches at the Fertitta Tennis Complex are free of charge.
