Rebels Have Offensive Battle With Rams And Collect A 20-19 Victory

Bri Williams hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the seventh

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team was in an intense offensive battle with Colorado State and came out on top with a huge 20-19 victory to even the series on Saturday afternoon at Ram Field. The Rebels (16-10, 1-1 MW) had season-highs in runs scored, hits (17), RBI (16) and home runs (three) against the Rams (10-15, 1-1 MW)
 
The Scarlet & Gray scored at least two runs in five of the seven innings played. UNLV was led by Karmyna Becerra and Kailani Olivas who each went 3-for-5 at the plate. Becerra was also tied for the lead in RBI (three) and runs scored (three). Four different Rebels each had two hits apiece, while Charelle Aki and Jesse Farrell each had three RBI, respectively. All three UNLV pitchers saw the circle, and Amelia Weber got the win for her seventh victory of the season.
  
HOW IT WENT DOWN: The first inning was scoreless on both sides, but the Rebels jumped out front in the top of the second inning with a big two-out rally. After the first out, the Rebels reached on a Rams' error. With two outs, Maddie Scott singled through the left side to give UNLV runners on the corners. Kailani Olivas then hit an infield single, which brought in a run and also the Rebels were heads up on the base path as they scored on another error by Colorado State, 2-0. Gwyn Burnett drew a walk to give UNLV two base runners again. Ariana Martinez blooped a single down the left field line scoring both runners, 4-0. Karmyna Becerra hit a double off the right center wall and brought Martinez across the plate, 5-0. Jesse Farrell then hit an infield single of her own and was able to move to second as the Rams tried to pick off Becerra. However, Charelle Aki then sent one up the middle scoring Becerra and Farrell to give UNLV a 7-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, the Rams added a run on one hit, 7-1. The Rebels were held off the scoreboard in the top of the third, and the Rams tallied five runs on six hits in the bottom half. In the top of the fourth inning, UNLV extended the lead, 12-6, after scoring five runs on five hits. The Rams started to inch back in the bottom of the fourth, bringing in three runs on four hits to make it 12-9. The Scarlet & Gray scored three more runs in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a three-run home run by Farrell, 15-9. CSU countered and took the lead for the first time of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring 10 runs and made it 19-15. UNLV got within one in the top of the sixth inning, 19-18, after Ariana Martinez singled which cleared both base runners and crossed the plate herself on a wild throw by the Rams' second baseman. In the Rebels' last at-bats, with two outs, Diamond Sefe drew a walk. Bri Williams was then called from the bench to pinch hit and on the first pitch she saw, she sent the ball sky-high over the left field wall to put the Rebels back on top 20-19. In the bottom half of the final frame, the Rebels were able to get the first two outs. The Rams then hit back-to-back singles giving them the game-winning run on first. However, Amelia Weber sat down the last out of the game with a strikeout to hold onto the win.
 
  
OTHER NOTES:
  • Martinez, Farrell, Aki and Burnett each had two hits against the Rams.
  • Martinez and Olivas had two RBI on the day.
  • Martinez now has 183 career RBI and has now reached base in five straight games.
  • Nine different Rebels crossed the plate against the Rams.
