LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball came up short and fell 5-3 to Fresno State in the opening game of the three-game Mountain West series on Friday night at Eller Media Stadium.

The Rebels (16-13, 1-3 MW) went ahead first 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning, but the Bulldogs (18-9, 4-0 MW) tied the game in the top of the fourth inning and took the lead in the top of the fifth. The Scarlet & Gray were led by
Karmyna Becerra and
Ariana Martinez, who each went 2-for-4 on the night. Martinez also had one RBI against Fresno State.Â

HOW IT WENT DOWN: After a scoreless first inning and top of the second inning, the Rebels struck first in the bottom half of the second. With bases loaded and only one out,
Maddie Scott hit a two-run double to left field giving UNLV a 2-0 lead.
Ariana Martinez then came to the plate and with a 2-1 count, she sent one right back up the middle bringing in another run, 3-0. In the third inning, both squads were held off the scoreboard and in the top of the fourth, Fresno State tied the game scoring three runs on three hits. In the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs went ahead for the first time of the game after they scored two runs on three hits and made it 5-3. In the sixth inning, the Rebels tried to get a two-out rally going with a runner on, but was retired on a ground ball. In the top of the final frame, the Bulldogs had one runner on with one out, and the Rebels sat down Fresno State with a double-play to go back to the plate. In the bottom of the seventh, with two outs, the Scarlet & Gray again tried to get a two-out rally going, but was retired on another ground ball to the left side.
OTHER NOTES:
- Kailani Olivas was 1-for-2 at the plate and scored a run for UNLV.
- Maddie Scott had one hit, which was a double and led the team in RBI with two.
- Bri Williams, Sofia Morales and Diamond Sefe each had a hit against the Bulldogs.
- Karmyna Becerra is now on a five-game hitting on-base streak.
- The Rebels saw three different Bulldog pitchers.
- UNLV and Fresno State were tied in hits with each squad having nine.
