Rebels Fall In Battle With The Broncos

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team battled it out with Boise State in game one of the three-game series, but fell 14-9 on Thursday evening at Eller Media Stadium.
 
The Rebels (18-15) and Broncos (23-11) were tied three times and exchanged the lead twice through seven innings. Jesse Farrell led the squad at the plate going 2-for-3 including a walk, a double, a home run and scored two runs for the Scarlet & Gray. Farrell's home run tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning 9-all. Bri Williams also hit a home run against the Broncos, which was a two-run blast in the fourth inning that had the Rebels within one, 9-8.
 
HOW IT WENT DOWN: In the top of the second inning, the Broncos scored first on an RBI triple, 1-0. In the bottom of the second inning, the Rebels countered and scored five runs on two hits which included a two-run double by Ariana Martinez to take a 5-1 lead. Boise State went back ahead in the top of the third inning, scoring six runs on six hits, 7-5. UNLV was able to get within one, in the bottom of the third inning on a Sofia Morales RBI, 7-6. The Broncos tallied two more runs on two hits in the top of the fourth inning to make it 9-6. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Martinez drew a four-pitch walk. After the second out of the inning, Bri Williams sent the first pitch she saw over the right center wall to get UNLV within one, 9-8. The Rebels held the Broncos off the board in the top of the fifth inning, and Jesse Farrell tied the game in the bottom half on a solo home run over the center field wall. In the top of the sixth, the Broncos went back on top bringing in two runs, 11-9. In the top of the final frame, Boise State tallied three more runs to go ahead 14-9. In the bottom half of the final frame, the Rebels were unable to get a two-out rally going and were retired on the final out.
 
OTHER NOTES:
  • Ariana Martinez had one hit on the day, which was a two-run double. She also scored two runs for UNLV.
  • Sofia Morales also had one hit and an RBI.
  • Brooke Pisciotta and Maddie Scott tallied RBI. Scott additionally had two walks.
  • Yanina Sherwood pitched 4.1 innings and had five strikeouts.
  • The Rebels struck out seven Broncos.
  • Martinez and Williams are now both on five-game hitting streaks.
  • Williams has now reached base in six straight games.
  • Martinez and Scott are now each on a five-game on-base streak. 
UP NEXT: The Rebels will look to even the series against the Broncos in game two on Friday, March 28 at 3 p.m.
