LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's tennis team thrived in Friday's Southern Nevada heatwave, downing first-place San Jose State 4-1 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
With temperatures in the 90s and former coaching great Kevin Cory looking on, the Rebels, who are undefeated in league play at home this season, improved to 15-5 overall and 6-2 in the Mountain West while the Spartans fell to 15-3 and 6-2 in league action.
Doubles play was over quickly.
Cindy Hu and
Coco Zhao rolled past Olaya Bances and Duru Durgun, 6-1, on court two before
Kaho Oyama and
Sofiia Sokolvak finished off Emma Fantousis and Soledad Fayos, 6-2, at No. 3.
In singles,
Nikol Mircheva improved to 19-4 on the season with a quick, 6-3, 6-1, win over Bances at the fourth position before
Veronika Kliuch downed Durgan, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2. After SJSU earned its lone point on court six, it became a race to earn the clincher and freshman
Kaho Oyama was the winner, 6-3, 7-6, over Fantousis on court five.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Nikol Mircheva's doubles match was halted but the German sophomore set the tone in singles with a quick sweep to make her 15-3 in dual matches this season.
