Rebels Fall In Hard Fought Battle Against San Jose State

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team was unable to complete the comeback and fell 4-3 in the Mountain West two-game series finale against San Jose State on Saturday at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels and Spartans split the two-game series.
 
The Rebels (20-23, 3-13 MW) tied the game 1-all against the Spartans (19-23, 6-10 MW) in the bottom of the third inning and were within one in the bottom of the fifth, but were unable to capitalize on a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. Ariana Martinez, Jesse Farrell and Sofia Morales were the offensive leaders for the Scarlet & Gray. Martinez was 2-for-3 with three RBI, a home run and a run scored. Farrell was also 2-for-3 on the day, which included two runs scored, a double and a walk. Morales was 2-for-4 against San Jose State.
 
HOW IT WENT DOWN: The first inning was scoreless until San Jose State scored in the top of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, with two outs, Jesse Farrell drew a five-pitch walk. Sofia Morales then roped a single through the left side to give UNLV runners on first and second. Ariana Martinez then singled through the right side to bring Farrell home and tied the game 1-all. In the top of the fourth inning, the Spartans tallied another run on an infield single to take a 2-1 lead. San Jose State scored two more runs in the top of the fifth inning and made it 4-1. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Jesse Farrell doubled down the left field line with one out. Sofia Morales then grounded out to the right side, moving Farrell to third. Ariana Martinez stepped in the box and with a green light and a 3-0 count, Martinez roped a two-run homer over right field to get the Rebels within one, 4-3. In the bottom half of the seventh, Farrell hit a single to left center with two-outs. UNLV was then retired on a rocket line drive to shortstop.
 
OTHER NOTES:
  • Charelle Aki had one hit for the Rebels.
  • Amelia Weber and Yanina Sherwood each saw the circle for UNLV. Weber and Sherwood each collected two strikeouts.
  • Farrell is now on an eight-game hitting streak and an 11-game reached base streak.
  • Martinez has reached base in five straight games.
  • Aki is on a three-game hitting streak and has reached base in four consecutive games.
 
UP NEXT: UNLV will play Utah State in its final road Mountain West series beginning on Friday, April 25 and concluding on Sunday, April 27. Game one on April 25 will be at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT.
