Rebels Collect 5-0 Shutout Over Aggies In Game One

UNLV earned its fifth shutout of the season and second in MW play

LOGAN, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) - After nearly an hour and a half of a weather delay, the UNLV softball team shut out Utah State, 5-0, in game one of the three-game Mountain West series on Friday at LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field.

The Rebels (21-23, 4-13 MW) had a four-run second inning to hold a lead over the Aggies (25-21, 10-7 MW) and remained in control the remainder of the game scoring another run in the top of the fourth. Yanina Sherwood went the distance in the circle for her 10th victory as she threw her ninth complete game of the season and second shutout of the season. Sherwood and the Scarlet & Gray defense held Utah State off the board, for only the Aggies' second shutout loss of the season. Sherwood allowed only four hits, three walks and struck out seven Aggies on the day, which is only one strikeout short from tying her career-high. Karmyna Becerra, Ariana Martinez and Charelle Aki led the UNLV offense. Becerra was 3-for-4 including an RBI and a double. Martinez and Aki each went 2-for-4, while Martinez roped a double and a three-run home run, respectively.

HOW IT WENT DOWN: In the top of the second inning, the Rebels jumped out front first 1-0 on an RBI single through the left side by Maggie Vasa with two-outs. With runners on first and second, Ariana Martinez sent the first ball she saw over the left field wall for a three-run homer to give UNLV a 4-0 lead. The third was scoreless by both sides and in the top of the fourth inning with two outs, Jesse Farrell hit a single back up the middle. Karmyna Becerra then stepped to the plate and roped a double to right field and Farrell was able to come across the plate to make it 5-0. The next two and half innings of play, both squads were held off the board. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Sherwood and the Rebels retired the Aggies in order which included two strikeouts to earn the win.
