Rebels Split Doubleheader And Win Series Against Utah State

UNLV won the three-game Mountain West series against Utah State 2-1

LOGAN, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team split the doubleheader and won the three-game Mountain West series, 2-1, against Utah State on Saturday at LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field.
 
The Rebels (22-24, 5-14 MW) fell 12-4 in five innings in game one, but bounced back in game two to defeat the Aggies (26-22, 11-8 MW) 10-2 in five innings. Jesse Farrell led the UNLV offense in game one, going 2-for-2 including three RBI, a home run, a walk and scored two runs. Karmyna Becerra and Charelle Aki were the offensive leaders in game two of the day, each going 4-for-4. Becerra had a double, home run, three RBI and scored two runs. Aki had an RBI in game three. Yanina Sherwood pitched 5.0 innings allowing six hits and only two runs en route to her 11th victory of the season in game two of the doubleheader.
 
GAME ONE: UNLV 4, Utah State 12 (five innings)
 
The Rebels jumped out front in the top of the first inning on a two-run homer by Jesse Farrell, 2-0. The Aggies countered in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three runs on three hits to take a 3-2 lead. In the top of the third inning, Farrell drew a four-pitch walk with two outs. Karmyna Becerra then roped an RBI tiple to center to tie the game 3-all. In the bottom of the third inning, Utah State went back ahead scoring four runs on four hits and made it 7-3. In the bottom half of the fourth inning, the Aggies grabbed four more runs to take an 11-3 lead. The Rebels tacked on a run in the top of the fifth inning on a single through the right side by Farrell, 11-4. In the bottom of the fifth, hit a walkoff single to collect the run-rule win.
 
GAME TWO: UNLV 10, Utah State 2 (five innings)
 
In the top of the first inning, Farrell hit a single to center with one out. Karmyna Becerra then smacked a two-run home run over the center field wall to give UNLV a 2-0 lead. The Scarlet & Gray added three more runs in the top of the third inning on three hits, to take a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, the Aggies got on the board with an RBI triple, 5-1. In the top of the fourth inning, Farrell went yard over the center field wall to put UNLV up 6-1. The Rebels tallied four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to put themselves in a position to run-rule the Aggies, 10-1. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Utah State hit a solo home run to make it 10-2. The next batter for the Aggies singled through the left side to give them a runner on first with no outs. However, the Scarlet & Gray then retired the next three Utah State batters to hold onto the run-rule victory.
 
OTHER NOTES
  • On the day, Farrell hit a combined .833 (5-for-6) with two home runs and a double. She had five RBI, and scored five runs.
  • Becerra hit a combined .714 (5-for-7) on the day, hitting the cycle with a home run, triple and double. Becerra also had four RBI and scored two runs.
  • In game one, Ariana Martinez had one hit and scored a run for the Rebels. Martinez also had a hit, walk and scored a run in game two.
  • Sofia Morales had a hit in game two and scored a run.
  • Maddie Scott crossed the plate twice in game two and had a walk.
  • Destinee Noury came in to pinch hit in game two, and drew an RBI walk.
  • For the weekend, Becerra led the Rebels at the plate hitting a combined .727 (8-for-11). She had two doubles, a triple and a home run to go with five RBI and scored two runs.
  • For the weekend, Farrell batted a combined .667 (6-for-9) with one double and two home runs. She also had five RBI and scored six runs.
  • In Sherwood's two appearances, she went 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA including two complete games, one of seven innings and one of five innings. She moved to an overall record of 11-7. Sherwood held the Aggies to a .233 batting average.
  • Farrell is now on an 11-game hitting streak which is tied for the longest this season. She has also reached base in 14 consecutive games.
  • Martinez is now on a four-game hitting streak and has reached base in eight straight games.
  • Aki is on a seven-game reached base streak.

UP NEXT: The Rebels will close out the Mountain West regular season at home hosting New Mexico for three-games beginning on Thursday, May 1 and concluding on Saturday, May 3. UNLV will honor its four seniors: Karmyna Becerra, Ariana Martinez, Sofia Morales and Destinee Noury all weekend.
