CORVALLIS, Ore. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (4-2) won its third straight match after defeating UC Irvine (3-4) in straight sets on the opening day of the Oregon State-hosted ASICS Invitational at Gill Coliseum. Three of the four wins this season for the Scarlet & Gray have come via a sweep as they beat the Anteaters by a score of 25-13, 25-22, 25-15. The Rebels were paced by Rheanna Deen-Jackson's career tying-high four service aces, including three straight in the first set along with six total blocks and four kills.
HOW IT WENT DOWN: UNLV outhit UC Irvine by 247 points (.300 to .053), and threw down seven more kills (36-29) and committed 15 fewer errors (24-9). The Rebels hit .259, .297 and .346 in the three sets, respectively, with a total of six errors in the first two frames. The Anteaters, on the other hand, was held to -.097 in the first frame, .171 in the second set and .071 in the third and final frame. The Scarlet & Gray also held advantages in assists (32-28), service aces (8-5) and total blocks (12.0-10.0), but trailed the Anteaters in digs (34-37).
Senior Alondra Alarcon posted a team-high nine kills along with five digs and one assist to hit .350 overall. Jaida Harris followed suit with eight kills, four total blocks, six digs, one service ace and one assist. Basia Latos joined the kill party with seven digs, two block assists and one dig.
Caleigh King registered nine digs, three assists and a pair of service aces, while freshman Kaia Theile tallied a match-high 13 assists. Fellow setter Agata Makowska joined the double-digit assist tally with 11 of her own as well as a quartet of digs.
TURNING POINT: The Scarlet & Gray's 7-0 run in the opening set pushed their lead to 8-1 as Deen-Jackson opened the run with a service ace and went on to record three consecutive service aces during that run. Additionally, UNLV never trailed during the entire match.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Deen-Jackson's career tying-high four service aces, six total blocks and four kills was the difference maker as the sophomore middle blocker hit .571 overall (4-0-7)Â
