LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV sophomore kicker
Ramon Villela (v-EL-ah) has been named the Old Trapper Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week as the league announced its honors Monday.
The native of Upland, California, scored a career-high 11 points in the Rebels' historic 41-38 win at Miami (OH) on Saturday, including the game-winning field goal. His 27-yard three-pointer in the second quarter got his team on the board after falling behind 14-0 to the RedHawks and then his fifth extra point of the day tied things at 38 late in the fourth quarter. Finally, with just seconds remaining, he nailed a 23-yarder to give his team its first lead of the game. It marked the first time in history that UNLV swept its non-conference schedule and the first victory in 15 all-time trips to the Eastern Time Zone.
Villela is the first special teams winner for UNLV this season but the fourth overall weekly winner after just four games in 2025. This also marked the fourth straight season that a UNLV kicker earned at least one MW weekly nod (
Daniel Gutierrez in 2022,
Jose Pizano in 2023 and
Caden Chittenden in 2024).
UNLV, which is off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 1973-74, is off this week before heading to Wyoming to open Mountain West play. UNLV is next at home vs. Air Force on October 11 for Homecoming at 12:30 p.m. Fans can still take advantage of the recently launched Showtime Deal which, for only $66, allows fans to choose any three of the four remaining home games at Allegiant Stadium, with seating located on the north 200-level, including access to the Coors Light Landing.
