LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — The UNLV men's soccer team ended non-conference play on a high note with a 2-0 shutout victory over UC Irvine Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
Junior forward
Bryce Allred blasted in the Rebels' (3-4-2) go-ahead goal against the Anteaters (5-3-1) in the 42nd minute on an assist from his counterpart
Tyler Ware. Adding insurance, freshman defender
Ben Wallis connected on a header off the assist via cross by sophomore
Sawyer Crisostomo in the 69th minute.
Maintaining a tight guard on the net, junior goalkeeper
Hugo Lemos and the Rebel backline picked up their collective third clean sheet of the season. In his third goalkeeper win of the year, Lemos recorded two saves in 90 minutes of action.
STAT OF THE GAME: On a night that saw the Scarlet & Gray attack rack up four shots on goal, Lemos and the Rebel backline stole the show by keeping UCI without a shot on goal until the 72nd minute. Behind that defense, UNLV doubled up on the Anteaters for a 4-2 final advantage in shots on frame.
QUOTABLE: "I'm just really proud of our players. They've done a terrific job, they've stayed mentally strong when I think some teams would break and that's one of the things we've challenged them with. We've talked about building on our good performances and taking that into the next game, and every game we've been improving over the last two weeks. To be able to play a big team - UC Irvine is well-coached and does a great job with the ball - I'm just really excited for the guys. They deserve it tonight."
-UNLV Head Coach BJ Craig
UP NEXT: The Rebels will kick off their WAC slate with another 7 p.m. home match on Saturday, Oct. 4 vs. Utah Tech.
