Rebels Fall In MW Opener Against San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team was unable to hold on and fell 5-2 in the Mountain West opener against San Jose State on Friday evening at Spartan Softball Complex.
 
Diamond Sefe led the Rebels' (12-14) offense going 2-for-3 on the day including a double. Charelle Aki, Taryn Calderon, Mantha Hatzenbeller, Natalie Turner and Bri Williams all had hits against the Spartans (9-15). Hatzenbeller roped the squad's lone home run and Calderon had the team's other RBI. Calderon and Lyla Gonzalez each also drew a walk on the night.
 
HOW IT WENT DOWN: The first two innings were scoreless by both squads until the top of the third inning when Mantha Hatzenbeller sent the first pitch, she saw over the center field wall to give UNLV a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Spartans tallied two runs on three hits to take a 2-1 lead. San Jose State picked up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 4-1. In the bottom half of the sixth, the Spartans grabbed another run to extend the lead by four, 5-1. Diamond Sefe led off the top of the seventh inning with a double to left. Natalie Turner then singled to center giving UNLV runners on the corners. With one out, Lyla Gonzalez drew a five-pitch walk. Taryn Calderon followed with a five-pitch walk of her own, bringing in a run and made it 5-2. The Rebels were then retired with a strikeout and ground out.
 
OTHER NOTES:
  • Lauren Fettic and Raegen Everett each saw the circle tonight.
  • Sefe and Hatzenbeller both crossed the plate for the Rebels.
  • Williams also had a double on the night. She has now extended her on-base streak to 14 straight games.
  • Sefe is on a four-game on-base streak.
  • Gonzalez has now reached base in three consecutive games.
 
UP NEXT: UNLV looks to even the series against San Jose State on Saturday, March 14 at 3 p.m. at Spartan Softball Complex.
