Softball Completes Sweep Against Boise State

UNLV extends its win streak to seven games and completed its third straight Mountain West series sweep

BOISE, Idaho (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team completed the sweep over Boise State after a 9-6 victory in the three-game Mountain West series finale on Sunday afternoon. The Rebels have clinched a spot in the Mountain West Softball Championships.
 
The Rebels (27-18, 14-5) and Broncos (20-29, 6-13) went back and forth exchanging the lead three times as well as being tied three times. It wasn't until Bri Williams hit a go-ahead two-run single through the right side in the top of the seventh to lift the Rebels to victory. Diamond Sefe had a career day at the plate going 4-for-5 including a solo home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Williams, Keyannah Chavez and Presley Barnes each were 2-for-4 against the Broncos. Williams had a team-high three RBI, a walk and scored a run. Chavez had two RBI and a walk. Mantha Hatzenbeller was 1-for-2 on the day including two walks, an RBI and crossed the plate twice. Lauren Fettic collected the win in relief for her 12th of the season.
 
HOW IT WENT DOWN: Diamond Sefe got the Rebels on the board first in the top of the second inning on a solo blast over center, 1-0. However, the Broncos answered in the bottom of the second with a solo homer to left center to tie the game 1-all. In the top of the fourth with one out, Sefe singled to left. Charelle Aki then walked. Presley Barnes then singled through the right side to load the bases. Mantha Hatzenbeller then walked on four straight balls which brought in a run and made it 2-1 UNLV. In the bottom of the fifth, Boise State took the lead 3-2 on a two-run home run. In the top of the sixth, Barnes led things off with an infield single. Hatzenbeller then drew another walk. Rachel Cook put down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to put the Rebels in scoring position. Lyla Gonzalez also drew a walk, which loaded the bases. On a full count, Bri Williams also drew a walk bringing in a run to tie the game 3-all. With two outs, Keyannah Chavez roped a single to right field bringing in two runs to give UNLV back the lead, 5-3. With a full count, Sefe sent a single right back to center scoring another run and made it 6-3. In the bottom of the sixth, the Broncos tied the game 6-all after a bases clearing double. With one out in the top of the seventh, the Rebels had three straight singles by Hatzenbeller, Cook and Gonzalez to load the bases. Williams then stepped to the plate and hit a single through the right side scoring two runs to give the Rebels back the lead at 8-6. With two outs, Chavez drew a walk and as the ball hit the dirt and went behind the Broncos' catcher Gonzalez scored from third to give UNLV a 9-6 lead. In the bottom half of the seventh, Boise State had a runner on second with one out. Lauren Fettic struck out the next batter and a line out to Natalie Turner at second closed out the game for the Rebels' victory.
 
OTHER NOTES
  • The Rebels out-hit the Broncos again, 13-7.
  • Lyla Gonzalez had a hit, walk and scored two runs for UNLV.
  • In Fettic's 1.2 innings of work in relief, she struck out three of the nine batters faced.
  • Gwyn Burnett had a stolen base against the Broncos.
  • For the series, Sefe had a huge weekend hitting a combined .636 (7-for-11) including two home runs, three RBI, a double and scored five runs. She also had two walks through three games against the Broncos. Sefe additionally led the Rebels in slugging percentage (1.273) and on-base percentage (.692). Sefe is now on a five-game hitting streak and has reached base in 12 straight games.
  • Hatzenbeller additionally had a huge weekend in her home state, batting a combined .556 (5-for-9) including two home runs, five RBI and crossed the plate five times. She also had two walks to go with an on-base percentage of .636. Hatzenbeller had a slugging percentage of 1.222.
  • In her homecoming to her hometown, Fettic went 2-0 in her three appearances against the Broncos and collected a save for her third of the season. She pitched 10.2 innings including her fourth complete game of the season and struck out nine Broncos. She only allowed three walks and held Boise State to bat a .304.
  • Chavez is now on a 16-game on-base streak.
  • Rachel Cook has extended her on-base streak to 10 games. 
UP NEXT: The Rebels will continue on the road and next visit Grand Canyon for three games beginning on Friday, April 24 and concluding on Sunday, April 26. UNLV and GCU will open the weekend series on Friday, April 24 at 7 p.m. PT.
