Men’s Basketball Athlete (1989-1991)

UNLV’s reigning three-point king, Anderson Hunt is a national champion shooting guard who remains the school’s only Final Four Most Outstanding Player award winner. Born and raised in Detroit, Hunt was the area’s top player at legendary Southwestern High School when he chose to head west and join Jerry Tarkanian’s Runnin’ Rebels. He turned in a dream first season, including sinking arguably the most famous shot in program history (pictured above left) when he nailed a spinning three-pointer over a fallen Kenny Lofton with two seconds left as UNLV edged top-ranked Arizona in the NCAA West Regional semifinal. After leading the team in three-pointers as a rookie, Hunt represented the West squad at the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival in Oklahoma City. Year Two was quite an encore as Hunt helped guide the Rebels to the national championship as the team’s second-leading scorer, finishing in double-figures in 31 of 39 games. After pouring in 30 points and dishing out 13 assists vs. LMU in the West Regional Final, Hunt continued his torrid streak when the squad hit Denver. In fact, he was named 1990 NCAA Final Four MOP after scoring 20 points in the win over Georgia Tech in the national semifinal and then a game-high 29 on 12-16 shooting in the romp over Duke in the historic title game. In his third and final year before turning professional, Hunt averaged 17.2 points for a squad that many observers still consider one of the best in the sport’s history. His game-high 29 points in the Final Four loss to Duke again earned him a spot on the NCAA All-Final Four Team. A first team all-conference pick, Hunt was an Honorable Mention All-American guard in 1991 and made his third consecutive Big West Conference All-Tournament Team. Despite leaving early from school, the sharp-shooter still stands as UNLV’s all-time three-point shooter with 283 made in his career. He finished ranked 10th in career scoring for the proud program with 1,632 points after turning in three of the top-10 three-pointer seasons in school history.
