Women's Hoops Falls To Nevada, Reno, 83-75

RENO, Nev. - Kate Smith led all scorers with 26 points as four Wolf Pack players scored in double figures to lead the Nevada, Reno women's basketball team past UNLV 83-75 in overtime at Lawlor Events Center Saturday.

Rachel Sorensen scored 17 points, and Katie Golomb and Ashley Bastian each had 13 for UNR (5-3). Smith led the team in rebounding with 12.

Linda Fr?hlich led UNLV (4-3) with 18 points and 12 rebounds, but fouled out before the end of regulation. It marked her fifth double-double in as many games. Constance Jinks added a career-high 16 points and Dayna Gambill contributed 13.

UNR opened up the overtime period with a 7-2 run and broke UNLV's three-game winning streak with the eight-point win.

UNLV used a 15-4 run over 7:28 in the second half to take its first lead of the game at 54-52 with 7:54 remaining. The Lady Rebels then held a 65-61 lead with 1:12 left in regulation, however UNR scored the remaining four points including two free throws by Kate Smtih with 6.2 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

UNR raced out to an 8-0 lead to start the game and held UNLV scoreless until the 16:43 mark. The Lady Rebels battled back to trail by only two points at 18-16 with 8:02 left, however they would get no closer as UNR used a 7-2 spurt to close out the first half to take a 39-29 lead into the break.

The Lady Rebels will now travel to Nassau, Bahamas to face Liberty in the Nassau Sun Splash Shootout. The tournament also features Duke and Cal State Sacramento. UNLV's first contest will be on Monday, Dec. 20 at 6:00 p.m. PST against the Lady Flames and it will conclude play in the shootout on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at either 4 or 6 p.m. PST.
