Assistant A.D. Gabbard Leaving UNLV

LAS VEGAS - UNLV Assistant Athletic Director Tom Gabbard is resigning from his position, efffective July 24, to accept a promotion with the position as Associate Athletic Director for Internal Affairs at Virginia Tech.

Athletic Director Charles Cavagnaro has announced that Wendy Meyers will be appointed to the title of Assistant Athletic Director /Finance for the athletic department.

"We are certainly delighted that Tom has an opportunity to advance in the profession, but at the same time, we hate to lose his expertise." Cavagnaro said.

"We are fortunate to have someone with the UNLV background and the ability of Wendy Meyers," Cavagnaro added. "We are looking forward to a long and positive relationship. It's great to have someone with Rebel roots to demonstrate leadership capabilities."

Gabbard joined the UNLV Athletic Department in March of 1992 and worked for six years. At Virginia Tech, he will be in charge of facilities and maintenance; supervise Tech?s facilities managers and game operations coordinator; and oversee half of the departments Olympic sports. He will work on the construction of all new athletic facilities and will work with the university on the maintenance of all athletic facilites.

"I'm pleased that I had the opportunity to work at UNLV," Gabbard said. "We were able to secure some first class facilites (ie, Earl E. Wilson Baseball Stadium and the Lied Athletic Complex) through the great support of some terrific donors in this community.

"I look forward to moving a little closer to home and to have an impact with some new facilities at Virginia Tech."

Meyers has been a member of the UNLV Athletic Department since August of 1989. Wendy played four seasons (1984-88) under coach Jim Reitz on the UNLV swim team. She was a three-time All-American (1986 - - 400 medley relay; 1987 - - 200 backstroke; 1988 - - 400 individual medley). She is a 1988 UNLV graduate and looks forward to her new position.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity," Meyers said. "I look forward to the challenges and rewards of working with the senior staff in the athletic department as well as the university."
