The UNLV women's basketball team will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 27 as it hosts Long Beach State at 5:00 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center (18,500). The game will precede the Runnin Rebels game with Columbia at 7:35 p.m. and will be the first of three consecutive contests at the T&M for the Lady Rebels. The Lady Rebel contest may be heard live on KSFN AM 1140 in Las Vegas with Bob Blum calling the action.
Lady Rebels on the Air
UNLV is in its second season on KSFN AM 1140. Every Lady Rebel contest including any and all postseason play may be heard on the Las Vegas sports radio station. Bob Blum, the dean of West Coast broadcasters, is in his 11th season as voice of the Lady Rebels.
Regina Miller Radio Show
UNLV Head Coach Regina Millers Radio Show may be heard prior to the tipoff of every Lady Rebel game this season. Bob Blum will host the five minute pregame show on KSFN AM 1140.
The Lady Rebels
UNLV (5-3) has already exceeded its victory total from each of the past three seasons as it has started off the 1998-99 campaign 5-3...The Lady Rebels are off to their best start since 1993-94...UNLV is coming off a 4-23 season...The Rebels were 3-11 last year in the WACs Mountain Division which was seventh...UNLV most recently lost at Southern Utah 80-57...Prior tho that, UNLV was defeated at Arkansas State 101-78 and before that hosted the Four Queens Shootout losing to Belmont 68-61 on the first day and defeating Tenn.-Chattanooga 68-42 in the consolation game...UNLV won its first four games of the season for the first time since 1990-91...6-2 freshman guard/forward Linda Froehlich leads the Rebels in scoring with 21.8 ppg (leads the WAC) and rebounding with 8.8 rpg (second in the WAC)...5-6 senior guard Kristen Pool is the only other Lady Rebel averaging double figures in scoring with 12.4 ppg...She is also averaging a team-high 5.8 assists per game...Led by new coach Regina Miller, the Lady Rebels return eight letterwinners from a year ago including seven seniors...UNLV welcomes eight newcomers including three walk-ons and a transfer that will not be eligible until the 1999-2000 season.
The Opponent
LONG BEACH STATE (5-4) is coming off a 7-19 season...The 49ers recorded a 4-11 mark in Big West Conference play last year and finished tied for fifth in their division...LBSU has won its last two games to capture the championship of the Beach Classic...The 49ers beat East Tennessee State in the first game 91-61 and followed that up with a 62-53 win over Oklahoma State...LBSU is 5-0 at home and 0-3 on the road...Long Beach State is led by 6-8 junior center Rhonda Smith who is averaging 13.1 ppg and 8.6 rpg...Head Coach Dallas Boychuk is in her fourth year at LBSU with a career record of 38-53.

Head Coach Regina MillerRegina Miller is in her first season as head coach of the Lady Rebel basketball program. Miller came to UNLV from Western Illinois where she was the head coach of the Westerwinds for the past six seasons. While at WIU, she led the Westerwinds to the 1995 regular season and post-season conference championships, and the NCAA Tournament. She was also honored as the 1995 Illinois Basketball Coaches Associations Coach of the Year. Prior to earning the post at WIU, where she compiled a record of 60-100, Miller spent five years an assistant coach at her alma mater and national power Old Dominion from 1987-92. ODU reached the NCAA Tournament four of the five years she was there. She landed her first assistant coaching position at Arizona (1986-87) and spent two years (1985-86) as a graduate assistant at Western Kentucky as it made the Final Four both years she was there. At UNLV her record is 5-3, while her career head coaching record is 65-103.
Assistant Coaches
UNLVs assistant coaches are Lisa Rathbun, Staci Schulz and Carrie Daniels. Rathbun came to UNLV from Cleveland State where she was the recruiting coordinator as an assistant coach for three years. Rathbun, who was a player at Brigham Young from 1988-92, recruited honorable mention All-American classes reated by Blue Star Index Scouting Service and a top-100 player at CSU. Schulz came to UNLV from Western Illinois where she was an assistant coach for one season. Schulz was a player at Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D., from 1991-96. Daniels has spent the previous two seasons with on the Lady Rebels staff.
UNLV at Southern Utah Recap
CEDAR CITY, Utah (12/21) - Sophomore Sarah Pratt led all scorers with 17 points as Southern Utah defeated the UNLV womens basketball team 80-57 on Monday in a non-conference game at Centrum Arena.
With a 45-42 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the game, Southern Utah went on a 15-4 run over 4:08 to take a 14-point lead. The Thunderbirds increased their advantage to 21 points with 2:45 left on their way to the win.
After eight lead changes and one tie to start off the game, Southern Utah went on a 11-0 run over 3:36 to take a 22-13 lead with 8:13 to play in the first half. UNLV cut SUUs lead to 23-21 with 5:47 left and tied the score at 31 apiece with 1:44 remaining in the half. The Thunderbirds scored the halfs final six points to take a 37-31 lead into the break.
Southern Utah (6-4) was assisted in the victory by junior Kim Westwood's game- high of 11 rebounds. Southern Utah had a total of four players score in double figures.
Senior Angalete Dye scored the first eight points of the game for UNLV (5-3) en route to a team-high total of 14. She also led the team in rebounds with 10 for her third double-double of the season.
UNLV was called for 29 fouls for the game, compared to Southern Utah's 13. Freshman Linda Froehlich, who averaged 24.1 points and 9.4 rebounds entering the game, fouled out with 10 minutes remaining with five points and four rebounds. Froehlich only played 11 minutes because of her early foul trouble.
For the second half, Southern Utah was 19-of-23 from the free throw line, while UNLV had no attempts. For the contest, Southern Utah was 32-of-39 compared to UNLV's 8-of-11.
SUU out-shot UNLV .389 to .377 for the game and was .353 from three-point range compared to UNLVs .188. SUU recorded 45 rebounds to UNLVs 33.
Next Week
UNLV will remain in the Thomas & Mack Center next week as it hosts Nevada, Reno on Wed., Dec. 30 at 5:05 p.m., and New Orleans on Sun., Jan. 3 at 4:05 p.m. Following those two contests, UNLV will open up WAC play at Air Force on Jan. 9.
Last Year
The Lady Rebels were 4-23 during the 1997-98 campaign and went 3-11 in the WACs Mountain Division finishing seventh. UNLV was coached by LaDonna McClain for the first 20 (3-17) games of the season and was coached by Steve Corraro for the final seven (1-6). The team did not qualify for the WAC Tournament.

Lady Rebels in the Mack
UNLV plays most of its home games at the Lied Gymnasium, however the Lady Rebels have five scheduled dates in the Thomas & Mack Center. The Lady Rebels held their Alumni game at the Mack on Nov. 10 and have Long Beach State, Nevada, Reno, New Orleans and Colorado State scheduled in the building. UNLV has hosted 90 regular season games at the T&M over 15 years and has a mark of 69-21 in those games. UNLV hosted four games in the building during the 1997-98 season. They were Northern Arizona, Connecticut, Loyola Marymount and Hawaii.

With its five wins this year, UNLV has exceeded its win total from each of the past three seasons. In 1996-97 and 1997-98, UNLV recorded marks of 4-23 and in 1995-96, UNLV was 4-21.
UNLV Holds UTC to Lowest Opponent Point Total in Eight Seasons
UNLV held Tennessee-Chattanooga to 42 points for the game...It marks the fewest points allowed by UNLV since the 1990-91 season when it defeated Northern Arizona 82-32.
Froehlich Selected as WAC Player of the Week
Linda Froehlich became UNLVs first-ever WAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday, Nov. 30. Froehlich, a 6-2 freshman guard/forward from Oldendorf, Germany, led UNLV to a 2-0 mark at the Golden Gopher Classic, earning MVP honors. She was selected as the WACs Mountain Division Player of the Week after averaging 31.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and shooting .558 from the field in UNLVs wins over Delaware and Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn.
Lady Rebels Claim Title for First Time in Five Years
With its win at the Golden Gopher Classic, UNLV won its first tournament title since it won the UNLV Showboat Shootout in 1993-94. UNLV also won its first tournament on the road since the Houston Lady Cougar Classic in 1990-91.
Lady Rebel Honors
UNLV had two players named to the Golden Gopher Classic all-tournament team. Linda Froehlich and Kristen Pool received all-tournament honors, while Froehlich was named tournament MVP...Froehlich was most recently honored by being selected to the Four Queens Shootout all-tournament team.
Atop the NCAA
As of Dec. 14, Linda Froehlich was the nations top freshman scorer with 24.1 ppg and was eighth in the nation overall. She was 22nd in the country in steals with 3.4 per game. New stats were not available as of Dec. 22.
Leaders of the WAC
Freshman Linda Froehlich is leading the WAC in scoring and is second in rebounds and steals. She is eighth in field goal percentage, tied for 10th in blocks and tied for 18th in free throw percentage. Senior Kristen Pool is second in the WAC in assists, sixth in free throw percentage, 15th in steals and tied for 18th in scoring. Senior Angalete Dye is second in the WAC in blocks and tied for seventh in rebounding. As a team, UNLV is fourth in the WAC in steals, fifth in field goal percentage defense, fifth in free throw percentage, seventh in scoring, seventh in three-point field goal percentage, seventh in three-point field goal percentage defense, seventh in scoring margin, eighth in rebound margin and ninth in field goal percentage.
Double Digits
There are three Lady Rebels who have recorded double-doubles...Linda Froehlich has recorded three with 17 points and 13 rebounds at LMU, 25 points and 12 rebounds at UTSA and 24 points and 12 rebounds at Minnesota...Angalete Dye has recorded three with 10 points and 11 rebounds at UTSA, 11 points and 12 rebounds vs. UTC, and 14 points and 10 rebounds at SUU...Liz Wolfe had 15 points and 10 rebounds at LMU.
Super Superlatives
Linda Froehlich has recorded more points in one game than any other WAC player this season. Froehlich scored 39 vs. Delaware on Nov. 28. The next best effort came from Tricia Payne of TCU with 36. Froehlich has also recorded the most field goals in a game and the two highest field goal attempts total.
1999 WAC TOURNEY
For the third straight year, the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV will serve as the site of the WAC Womens and Mens Basketball Tournaments. The womens tournament will be held March 1-6 and will involve 12 of the 16 WAC teams. The top two teams from each division will receive a first-round bye, while the remaining eight teams will play first-round games on March 1. The womens quarterfinals will take place on March 3 with the same game times as the first round. The semifinals are slated for March 5 with the championship game scheduled for March 6.
