March 17, 1998LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Associate Head Coach Carol Spanks recorded the 700th win of her career with the Rebels two wins against New Mexico today. UNLV defeated the Lobos 4-2 and 1-0 in doubleheader action. Spanks came to UNLV four seasons ago with a career record of 577-315-5 as a head coach at Cal Poly Pomona. She is currently in her fourth year with UNLV and has now won 123 victories as a Rebel. With today's two wins, UNLV's record moves to 12-9 overall and 7-5 in WAC play. The Lobos fall to 12-17 overall and 2-8 in WAC.
Game one saw UNLV take the 1-0 lead in the third inning off a Linda Garza RBI-double. New Mexico tied in up in the fifth when Rachael Wennekamp drove in Nicole Abeyta on a double of her own. UNLV took control in the bottom of the fifth with three runs off two hits, and capitalized on a error in the Lobo outfield to go up 4-1. The inning was highlighted by Raven Coberg's base-hit which drove in two Rebel runs. Coberg was 3-of-6 with a run and two RBI on the day. New Mexico started a rally in the seventh, but UNLV held on to win by the 4-2 score. Brandi Isgar recorded the win to go 6-7 on the season.
Game two was a defensive battle. UNLV scored the only run in an errorless game. The run was scored in the second inning as Coberg scored off a single by Racheal Goodpaster. It proved to be all the Rebels would need as sophomore Danielle Ferriera pitched a four-hit shutout for her second win of the season.
The Rebels will travel to Cal State Fullerton this weekend to play in the Pony Invite. UNLV will take on Georgia State, Texas and Cal State Northridge in the first two days of action before participating in bracket and championship play Saturday and Sunday.
