FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Rebels lost two games of a doubleheader against Colorado State today at Ram Field, losing 0-8 (6) and 5-12. UNLV's record fell to 15-22 overall and 9-11 in the WAC.
In game one of the doubleheader the Rebels lost by way of the eight-run mercy rule. After scoring off two single home runs in the first and second innings, the Rams used a four-run third to jump to the 6-0 lead. They added another run in the fourth inning and held UNLV scoreless through six before getting their eighth run in the bottom of the sixth to end the game. UNLV scattered nine hits but still could not score as nine runners were left on base. Brandi Isgar picked up the loss to go 9-15 on the season. Racheal Goodpaster and Raven Coberg both had two hits to lead the Rebels.
In the nightcap Colorado State jumped to a quick lead, scoring six runs (two earned) in the first inning off sophomore pitcher Danielle Ferriera. Isgar came in relief in the second but could not halt the Ram offense as Holly Schmillen hit her second home run of the day, a three-run shot to right field. Kelly DeArman came in with two outs in the second. She retired six straight batters before giving up a single home run to shortstop Sarah Fredstrom. UNLV entered the bottom of the fifth trailing 0-10 and another possible mercy-rule ending. This time the Rebels responded with five runs on four hits, including two-RBI doubles by Linda Garza and Goodpaster, to cut the Ram lead to 10-5. That was as close as they would get before CSU added two more runs in the sixth inning to finish with the 12-5 victory.
UNLV will be back in action at Rebel Diamond on Tuesday, April 21 against San Diego State. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00pm.
