UNLV Falls to No. 18 Hawai'i in Season Finale

Feb. 26, 1998

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Senior guard Nani Cockett recorded a season-high 31 points, one shy of her career high and sophomore forward Kylie Page added a career-high 30 points as No. 18 Hawai'i defeated the UNLV Lady Rebels 87-70 in a Western Athletic Conference crossover women's basketball game, Thursday night at Thomas & Mack Center.

Because Hawai'i is in the Pacific Division and UNLV is in the Mountain Division the game did not count in either team's conference record.

UNLV took a 49-47 lead on junior forward Amy Wunderlich's turn-around jumper with 12:50 left in the game, but Hawai'i went on a 12-0 run over 2:20 to lead 59-49 with 10:30 remaining. Hawai'i coasted from there for the 17-point win.

UNLV led 8-3 early, but Hawai'i outscored the Lady Rebels 11-0 over the next 2:25 and led the rest of the half. Hawai'i went into halftime leading 37-33.

Hawai'i (24-2, 13-1) was assisted in the win by sophomore forward Raylene Howard's 16 points.

Five players recorded double figures in scoring for UNLV (4-23, 3-11) including the three seniors that were honored prior to the game for senior night. Junior center Liz Wolfe led the Lady Rebels with 21 points, one shy of her career high, and a career-high tying 14 rebounds. Senior guard Taneisha Gossett had 12 points, junior forward Amy Wunderlich had 11 points and 11 rebounds and senior forward Tekeira Strambler and senior guard Toby Girard each recorded 10 points.

The game was the season finale for the Lady Rebels as they failed to qualify for the WAC Tournament being held at the Thomas & Mack Center, March 2-7.
