LAS VEGAS - Freshman Linda Froehlich missed a triple-double by three steals as she led UNLV past Long Beach State, 64-56, in a non-conference women's basketball game Sunday at Thomas & Mack Center.
After leading by 12 points at halftime, UNLV (6-3) increased its lead to 18 points in the second half as it held a 43-25 advantage with 13:11 left in the game.
Long Beach State (5-5) cut the Lady Rebels' lead to 58-52 with 1:43 to play, however the 49ers would come no closer as UNLV jumped back out to a 12-point lead with 31 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
UNLV broke an early 10-10 tie with a 10-0 run over 4:05 to lead by 10 with 7:15 to play in the first half. Long Beach State cut the deficit to four points at 22-18, however UNLV scored 10 of the final 12 points of the half to take a 32-20 lead into the break.
Froehlich scored 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and recorded seven steals to lead UNLV, which snapped its two game losing streak. Senior Angalete Dye also recorded a double-double for the Lady Rebels with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior Kristen Pool was the only other UNLV player in double figures in scoring with 14 points, while adding six steals and five assists.
Long Beach State was led by junior Nicole Legaux's career-high 22 points. Sophomore Charel Bailey led the team in rebounds with seven.
UNLV shot .373 (19-51) from the field, .200 (2-10) from three-point range and .800 (24-30) from the free throw line, while LBSU was .358 (19-53), .571 (8-14) and .588 (10-17), respectively.
The Lady Rebels out-rebounded the 49ers 42-33 and recorded seven more steals at 19-12.
UNLV will remain at home in the Thomas & Mack Center for its next contest as it hosts Nevada, Reno on Wed., Dec. 30 at 5:05 p.m.
