TULSA, Okla. - Junior Kasie Pittman hit a three-pointer with 27 seconds left to break a 62-62 tie and freshman Shequinna Dinkens hit a free throw to seal Tulsa's 68-62 victory over UNLV in a Western Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Tulsa trailed by eight points with just under nine minutes remaining in the game and used a 8-0 run over 2:11 to take a 61-58 lead with 3:42 left.
Senior Kristen Pool and freshman Linda Froehlich each hit a free throw to put the Lady Rebels down by one, before Pittman sank one to put the Golden Hurricane back up by two points.
Froehlich hit a baseline jumper in traffic to tie the score at 62 before Pittman hit the game-winning shot with less than 30 seconds on the clock.
In the first half, Tulsa jumped out to the early lead by scoring the first seven points of the game. UNLV cut the lead to one point, but Tulsa gave itself an eight-point cushion and led 25-17 with 9:57 to play in the half.
UNLV went on a 9-0 run over the next 1:52 to take its first lead of the game. The lead switched hands twice from that point as UNLV led 36-34 at the break.
Tulsa (4-12, 2-2 WAC), which had four players score in double figures, won its second WAC game in a row. TU was led by Pittman and junior Tammy Goyne, who both recorded 16 points. Freshman Carla Morrow added 15 points, while Dinkens contributed 11. Morrow and Dinkens both led the team in rebounds with eight, while Pittman recorded a team-high six assists.
UNLV (9-5, 1-2 WAC) was led by Froehlich's game-highs of 32 points and 12 rebounds. Froehlich, who recorded her seventh double-double of the season, added three assists, one blocked shot and one steal. Senior Angalete Dye was the only other Lady Rebel in double figures in scoring with 14. Dye also grabbed eight rebounds, while Pool turned in six assists for UNLV.
UNLV's next action will be home at Lied Gymnasium as the Lady Rebels host SMU for their WAC home opener on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7:35 p.m.
