March 26, 1998 LAS VEGAS - UNLV won two of three doubles matches en route to a 5-4 victory over 45th-ranked Maryland at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Thursday.
The win, which was UNLV's third straight after an eight match losing streak, improved the Lady Rebels to 6-8 overall.
The two teams split singles matches to start the day. Veronica Goude won in straight sets at No. 3, Lisa Annebro did likewise at No. 4 and Marcella Valkenhoff took three sets to win at No. 6 for UNLV's singles points.
In doubles play, the nation's 15th-ranked doubles team of Gee Gee Garvin and Susie Kocsis of UNLV won its match at the top spot 8-4. Maryland then re-tied things with a win at the second position as the Terp duo of Stacy Walkowitz and Chrissie Terrill rallied from a 7-1 deficit to beat Annebro and Britta Gabl 9-7.
However, UNLV's No. 3 team of Veronica Goude and Marcella Valkenhoff fought back from a 6-3 deficit to defeat Thea Ivanisevic and Adrienne Pavelko 9-7 to clinch the victory.
The Lady Rebels finish their home season on Saturday with Senior Day vs. Wichita State beginning at 10 a.m.
