LAS VEGAS - UNLV junior golfer Jeremy Anderson has been selected to represent the United States in the third-annual Palmer Cup, which will be played at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee, June 12-13.
Anderson will be making his second straight appearance in the event as he participated in last year's Palmer Cup. He is the second UNLV golfer to participate in the event as the first was former Rebel Ted Oh, who competed in the inaugural Palmer Cup. That squad was captained by UNLV head coach Dwaine Knight.
The Palmer Cup, which is a Ryder Cup type of competition for college golfers, is organized and presented by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and is sponsored by The Arnold Palmer Golf Company. It will feature top United States men's collegiate players competing against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I).
Players will compete in four fourball matches, four foursome matches and 16 singles matches over a two-day period. The winning team will be presented with The Palmer Cup Trophy and antique English sterling silver loving cup circa 1935.
The members of the U.S. team are selected by the GCAA's All-American Committee and the GB&I team is selected by the British Universities Sports Association.
The members of the U.S. team are: Anderson, Jonathan Byrd (Clemson), Ben Curtis (Kent State), John Engler (Clemson), Matt Kuchar (Georgia Tech), Hank Kuehne (SMU), Bryce Molder (Georgia Tech) and Michael Mortison (Georgia). The team is coached by Jim Brown of Ohio State and the manager is Tim Brown from Skidmore College.
The members of the GB&I team are Luke Donald (England/Northwestern), Johnny Foster (Northern Ireland/Univ. Of Ulster), Max Harris (England/North Carolina), Michael Hoey (Northern Ireland/Clemson), Oliver Lindsay (Scotland (Univ. of St. Andrews), Phillip Rowe (England/Exeter Univ.), Kyron Sullivan (Wales/Univer. Of Walkes, Inst. Of Cardiff) and Andrew White (Scotland/Univ. of St. Andrews). The team is coached by Keith Williams (England) and Alastair Crinson (England).
The inaugural event was played in 1997 at the Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Fla., where the U.S. team defeated GB&I 19-5. At last year's event played at the Old and New Courses in St. Andrews, Scotland, the U.S. and GB&I teams tied with a score of 12-12. The U.S. team retained the Palmer Cup by virtue of having won the year before.
Anderson leads the Rebels with a stroke average of 71.69 for the 1998-99 season and has won two individual titles this year to bring his career total to four.
UNLV's next action will be May 3-5 as it competes at the WAC Championships at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif.
