Golf Ranked No. 1 in Latest Poll

Feb. 25, 1998

LAS VEGAS, Nev.--The UNLV golf team moved up six spots to No. 1 in the seventh edition of the national MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, which were released Wednesday.

UNLV replaced Arizona as the nation's top-ranked team. Arizona is second, followed by Georgia Tech, Arkansas and Georgia. Clemson fell out of the top five to seventh.

Individually for the Rebels, sophomore Jeremy Anderson moved up six spots to No. 3 in the nation. Senior Bill Lunde improved to seventh from 38th and junior Charley Hoffman moved up one spot to 17th. UNLV and Arizona are the only two teams in the poll that have three players among the top 20.

The Rebels, who have opened the spring season with a school-record three-straight tournament victories, most recently captured the title at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Kaneohe, Hawai'i. UNLV has won five events this year, which marks the first time in history the Rebels have won more than four tournaments in a season.

The Rebels, who also are No. 1 in the GolfWeek/Taylor Made Collegiate Rankings, will be back in action March 13-15 as they host the Golf Digest Invitational at the Desert Inn Country Club in Las Vegas.

The MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings are administered by the College Golf Foundation and are determined by a point system formula based strictly on performance. Total points calculated are from the five best events of each team.
