March 18, 1998

LAS VEGAS - UNLV retained its lead as the nation's top team in the latest edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings released by the College Golf Foundation Wednesday.

The Rebels, who have won three of four tournaments this spring and a school-record five for the season, are in first place ahead of Arizona, Georgia Tech, Clemson and Texas Christian.

The Western Athletic Conference had six teams ranked among the top 25. After UNLV and TCU came Colorado State in 15th, Brigham Young in 19th, New Mexico in 21st and Texas-El Paso in 23rd.

Individually, UNLV's Jeremy Anderson moved up from fifth to a school-record-high second after taking sixth in last week's Golf Digest Collegiate Invitational in Las Vegas. The Rebels took third overall at the prestigious 15-team event.

Arizona's Rory Sabbatini is the nation's top-ranked men's golfer. Other Rebels ranked were Bill Lunde in 11th, Charley Hoffman in 23rd and Chris Berry in the 50th spot.

UNLV opens play Monday at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas.
