Runnin' Rebels Host USC Friday, Weber State Tuesday.

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Runnin' Rebels continue their four-game homestand against USC on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7:35 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center (18,500). The Runnin Rebels will close out the homestand against Weber State on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 7:35 p.m.

NOTE: The Runnin Rebels are ranked 25th by Sports Illustrated's 1998 preseason Top 25.

All Runnin Rebel games will be carried live on KXNT AM-840. Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick will call the action all season long. The pregame show for Fridays game will begin at 7 p.m. Fans can bring their radio to the game and tune in to KXNTs radio broadcast inside the Thomas & Mack Center on 99.5 FM. Runnin Rebel basketball can be heard on www.broadcast.com

TELEVISION: Friday's game will be televised on FOX Sports West 2. Tom Kelly and Reggie Theus will call the action.

RADIO/TV SHOW INFO: Game Time with UNLV Hoops television show will be shown every Sunday on KLAS TV-8 at 5:30 p.m. (begins Nov. 29). The show, with Head Coach Bill Bayno and host Chris Maathuis, features previews of upcoming opponents and highlights of previous games.

The Bill Bayno Radio Show can be heard live every Tuesday from Gordon Biersch (located on 3987 Paradise Road) at 7 p.m on KXNT AM-840 with hosts Ken Korach and Glen Gondrezick. The weekly show features interviews with coaches, opposing coaches as well as listener call-ins. Listeners are invited to call in to the show at (702) 733-5968. First coaches show will be on Monday, Nov. 30.

UNLV VS. SACRED HEART RECAP: The Runnin Rebels opened their 41st season of basketball on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Thomas & Mack Center with a 103-56 victory over Sacred Heart, which is the alma mater of UNLV head coach Bill Bayno. UNLV dominated the game from the opening tip. UNLV raced out to a 32-8 lead with 11:49 left in the half. UNLVs biggest lead of the half was 42 points at 57-15 (1:49) on a 3-pointer from freshman guard Desmond Herod. UNLV led 60-19 at halftime and shot a blistering .714 from the field (25-for-35). Sophomore center Kaspars Kambala and junior forward Shawn Marion led UNLV with 16 points each at intermission. All 13 Runnin Rebel players saw action in the game. UNLV held its biggest lead of the night at 59 points on a layup from junior guard Mark Dickel, giving UNLV a 95-36 lead with 7:12 to play. Kambala scored a career-high 25 points (11-for-13 FG) in 17 minutes and Marion added 18 in his Runnin Rebel debut. Senior forward Kevin Simmons rounded out the double figure scoring with 17. Dickel added 10 assists (two under his career high) and sophomore guard Greedy Daniels dished out a career-high 10 assists in 21 minutes. Sacred Heart was led by Andrew Hunter and John Randazzo with 13 points each. UNLV shot .638 from the field (44-for-69) and Sacred Heart shot .290 (20-for-69). UNLV outrebounded Sacred Heart 53-33.
UNLV vs. TROY STATE RECAP: The Runnin Rebels improved to 2-0 on the season with a 95-58 victory over Troy State on Monday, Nov. 16, at the Thomas & Mack Center. Prior to the game, UNLV unveiled the 1998 WAC Championship banner and the players and staff received the championship rings. UNLV, for the second straight game, played all 13 players as five posted double figures. UNLV, leading 11-10 at 16:18, went on a 27-2 run to post a 38-12 lead with 6:05 left in the half. UNLV led 49-26 at halftime. UNLV increased its lead to 30 points (60-30) on a 3-pointer by senior forward Kevin Simmons with 16:19 left in the game. UNLV held it biggest lead of 48 points at 91-43 with 4:47 to play on a dunk by freshman forward Chris Richardson. Junior forward Shawn Marion led UNLV with 18 points, 2 blocks and 4 steals. Sophomore center Kaspars Kambala scored 17 points in 16 minutes in the first half (did not play in the second half); freshman guard Desmond Herod added 14; Simmons 11 and senior guard Brian Keefe had 10. Sophomore guard Greedy Daniels tied his career-high with 6 steals and added 7 assists. Troy State was led by Eugene Christopher who scored a game-high 22 points. UNLV shot .487 from the field (37-for-76); .350 from 3-point range (7-for-20); .636 from the line (14-for-22). Troy State shot .328 from the field (20-for-61); .211 from 3-point range (4-for-19); .737 from the line (14-for-19). UNLV outrebounded Troy State 45-42.

USC: The Trojans are 1-0 on the season. USC defeated San Diego State 101-54 on nov. 17 at the L.A. Sports Arena. USC was 2-0 in exhibition games. The Trojans defeated I-Can All-Stars twice (two different squads) by the scores of 122-62 (Nov. 7) and 101-54 (Nov. 14). The Trojans compiled an overall record of 9-19 last season and 5-13 (8th)  in the PAC 10.

SERIES HISTORY: The series is tied 2-2. UNLV has won the last two meetings. UNLV defeated USC 82-72 last season (Dec. 2, 1997) at the L.A. Sports Arena. Greedy Daniels led UNLV with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals in 32 minutes. Corky Ausborne was UNLVs high scorer with 19 points. The Runnin Rebels defeated USC 80-75 on Dec. 28, 1996 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

RUNNIN REBEL HEAD COACH BILL BAYNO: He is in his fourth season as the head coach of the UNLV Runnin Rebels. He is UNLVs 10th head coach in the 40-year history of Rebel basketball. He has a career record of 54-39 (.581) in three seasons at the helm of Runnin Rebel basketball. Bayno has recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons (42-23 record over that stretch) and has guided UNLV to postseason play for two straight seasons. UNLV compiled an overall record of 22-10 in 1996-97 in Baynos second season. UNLV more than doubled its win total from 1995-96 (10-16 record). UNLV advanced to the third round of the NIT. Last season, UNLV compiled an overall record of 20-13. The Runnin Rebels had a remarkable run winning four games in five days in the WAC Tournament. UNLV posted victories over Hawaii, Utah, Fresno State and New Mexico to capture the WAC Tournament championship and receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UNLV reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1990-91 season. UNLV faced eighth-ranked Princeton in the NCAA East Regionals in Hartford, Conn. Bayno served seven years as the associate head coach at the University of Massachusetts under John Calipari (now head coach of the NBAs New Jersey Nets). Other coaching experience includes: 1987-88: Assistant Coach, Baptist College (Charleston, SC); 1986-87: Graduate Assistant Coach, University of Kansas; 1985-86: Graduate Assistant Coach, Seton Hall University. Playing experience includes: 1980-82: Massachusetts and 1983-85: Sacred Heart University.
3-POINT GOALS: Since the 3-point field goal was adopted by the NCAA in 1986-87, UNLV has converted at least one 3-pointer in all 391 games played (counting 2 games this season). The Big West Conference experimented with the 3-point shot in the 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. During that period, UNLV connected from 3-point range in 53 of 64 games. The UNLV streak for games in which it sank at least one 3-point shot stands at 404. The last time the Runnin Rebels failed to make at least one 3-pointer came against Long Beach State on Jan. 25, 1986.
WEBER STATE: The Wildcats compiled an overall record of 14-13 last season and 12-4 (2nd) in the Big Sky Conference. Weber State is 1-0 on the season. They defeated Southern Utah 81-75 on Nov. 13. Weber State will host BYU on Thursday, Nov. 19 before playing UNLV.
SERIES HISTORY: Weber State leads the series against UNLV 2-0. Weber State defeated UNLV 76-47 in the 1959-60 season and 79-78 on Dec. 29, 1979 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
WEBER STATE HEAD COACH RON ABEGGLEN: He is in his eighth season at Weber State and his record is 128-75 (.631) and career record over 13 seasons is 237-120 (.664).

UNLV defeated Central Florida 103-90 in overtime...the last time UNLV scored 100 points at the Thomas & Mack Center was against Nevada, Reno on Feb. 25, 1993.
