April 23, 1998 LAS VEGAS-The top-ranked UNLV golf team had two players chosen Thursday to represent the United States in two different events this summer.
Sophomore Jeremy Anderson will play for the United States at the second annual Palmer Cup, which will take place August 3-4 in St. Andrews, Scotland.
Senior Bill Lunde has been selected to play at the U.S. vs. Japan Matches that will be held July 30 through August 2 in Chiba, Japan.
In last year's inaugural Palmer Cup in Orlando, Fla., which was captained by UNLV Head Coach Dwaine Knight, the United States defeated Great Britain-Ireland 19-5. Former Rebel Ted Oh was a member of the United States' squad.
"From my own experience the Palmer Cup is one of the highlights of my collegiate coaching career," Knight said. "We are so thrilled that Jeremy received a nomination to play in the event and he will have a great experience playing at St. Andrews, which is known as the birthplace of golf. What an honor. He really deserves it. He has two wins this season and has become one of the top players in the country. I don't know of a greater honor than to represent your country in competition. I think it is the highlight of any person's career."
This marks the first time Anderson will participate in the Palmer Cup. For Lunde, this will be the second straight year he will represent his country in Japan.
"Bill has been such a spark for our team over the last two years," Knight said. "I am so thankful he has played here at UNLV and has grown as a golfer and as an individual. He was a real hit over there last year and I am excited for him and know he will do a great job."
