Second Round Play Of PING/Golfweek Preview Suspended

AUBURN, Ala. - Two separate rain delays totalling two hours resulted in the second round of the PING/Golfweek NCAA Preview to be suspended due to darkness with three groups still on the par-72, 6985-yard Grand National Lake Course Monday. Second round play will continue Tuesday at 7 am Central followed by the third and final round, which will begin immediately with a shotgun start.

Auburn, New Mexico and Florida were the only teams to not finish the second round.

First-round leader Clemson, followed up its first day 9-under 279 total with a 4-under 284 for a two-day score of 13-under 563, three shots better than Northwestern, which shot a 7-under 281 for a 10-under 566. Georgia is in third with a 1-under 285-290--575.

The remainder of the 15 teams that completed the second round is as follows: Arizona State (289-292--581), Georgia Tech (290-291--581), Oklahoma State (289-298--587), Houston (292-297--589), South Carolina (300-292--592), UCLA (298-299--597), UNLV (299-302--601), Texas (300-302--602), North Carolina (306-299--605), Minnesota (299-307--606), East Tennessee State (303-307--610) and Nebraska (320-307--627).

Clemson's Lucas Glover fired a 5-under 67 to take the individual lead with a 6-under 71-67--138 total, one shot better than his teammate, John Engler, who has a 69-72--141. Clemson's D.J. Trahan (68-72--140) is in a three-way tie for third with Jess Daley of Northwestern (71-69--140) and Brandon Di Tullio of UCLA (70-70--140), who are all 2-under par.

The start of morning play was delayed 50 minutes because of rain. The second round began at 8:30 am, and it rained continuously until play was suspended for an hour at 1:35 pm. Play continued at 2:45 pm, and it failed to rain for the remainder of the day.

The PING/Golfweek NCAA Preview, in which 17 of the 18 teams are nationally-ranked, is a precursor to the 2000 NCAA Men's Golf Championship that Auburn University will host at Grand National May 31-June 3.
